Research

CHERP investigators rigorously apply their expertise in 5 areas of scientific inquiry (i.e., data science, engagement science, systems science, implementation science, and policy analysis/evaluation) that advance VHA’s research priorities to improve healthcare quality and health equity for Veterans and support its evolution as a learning healthcare system.

CHERP investigators conduct leading-edge, partnered research by advancing the science and real-world application of implementation science, creating unique data linkages and analytical methods in data science, and studying the effects of VHA healthcare policy on health equity and access, patient outcomes, and costs of care in policy analysis and evaluation.

CHERP’s 3 Impact Goals—Health Equity, Clinical Therapeutics, and Dissemination and Implementation—are aligned with VA, VHA, Office of Research and Development, and Health Systems Research priorities and address the needs of Veterans and our operations partners.

  • Health Equity: Improve health equity and healthcare quality for Veterans and generate evidence to inform healthcare policies.
  • Clinical Therapeutics: Increase the accessibility, safety, and value of clinical therapeutics for Veterans and generate evidence to inform healthcare policies.
  • Dissemination & Implementation: Advance the science and real-world application of dissemination and implementation methods to improve the quality of VHA healthcare.

Our investigators have also improved clinical practice and informed health policy in two Additional Contribution Areas:

  • Long-Term Care & Aging: Develop practices that better support Veteran health, dignity, and independence across the lifespan.
  • Primary Care Practice & Complex Chronic Disease Management: Inform primary care practice for Veterans who are high-risk for poor health outcomes due to complex chronic diseases, functional limitations, and unmet social needs.
