Sherrie L. Aspinall, PharmD, MSc, BCPS is a Core Investigator in CHERP at VAPHS and a National Program Manager and PGY2 Pharmacy Residency Program Director in Medication-Use Safety & Policy with VAMedSAFE. Dr. Aspinall has successfully mentored numerous pharmacy residents and fellows throughout her career with the VA. She is also an Associate Professor in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Aspinall's research interests focus on understanding prescribing practices of high-risk and/or high-use medications, as well as medication use in at-risk Veterans. She is also interested in evaluating the impact of interventions on safe and appropriate medication use, in addition to associated changes in clinical outcomes.
As a well-trained researcher in the areas of pharmacoeconomics, health services, and outcomes research, Dr. Aspinall's work with CHERP and VAMedSAFE focuses on the safe, appropriate, and cost-effective use of medications. Specifically, she concentrates on understanding the prescribing practices of high-risk (e.g., anticoagulants, chemotherapy) and/or high-use medications (e.g., antidiabetic agents, fluoroquinolones), as well as medication use in older adults. Dr. Aspinall has extensive experience using medication records and other large clinical and administrative databases to answer research questions. In addition, she has contributed to the development, implementation, and evaluation of multiple interventions to improve VA prescribing safety and quality.
