Profile

Sonia Rupcic, PhD, MPH, MIA is an Advanced Fellow in Women’s Health at the Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion (CHERP) at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System (VAPHS). She is an applied medical anthropologist with public health training. She is passionate about developing justice-oriented approaches to care. At VA, she contributes to implementation and health services research that addresses the connections between healthcare and non-clinical problems like housing and financial hardship, especially among women and gender-diverse Veterans. Her current research seeks to improve medical-legal service coordination among Veterans who experience intimate partner violence. Her methodological expertise is in qualitative research, especially ethnography. Her research has been supported by CHERP, the Institutional Courage Foundation, Wenner-Gren Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies, the Mellon Foundation, the Social Science and Research Council, the National Science Foundation, Fulbright Program, and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. She earned her PhD in Anthropology from the University of Michigan in 2020 and her MPH from Columbia University’s School of Public Health in 2011. Her writing has been published in American Anthropologist, Comparative Studies in Society and History, Feminist Anthropology, Ethnology, and South African Crime Quarterly.
